Origami Cranes It is not confirmed when Origami officially began in Japan, but some contend it may have evolved from “furoshiki” the art of folding cloth when people carried their clothing changes to the public bath houses (17th century). Later, merchants carried their items for sale in the “furoshiki” and would unfold them using the previously folded cloth as the display background. During the late 17th and early 18th centuries (Genroku Era) the crane and boat motifs became popular on clothing, and in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, paper folding was taught in schools. In Japan, the crane symbolizes honor and loyalty. Stories have been written, tales have been told, including the story of Sadako – the young girl in Hiroshima who was 2-years old when the atomic bomb was dropped, and developed Leukemia. A friend told her the legend that she would be granted a wish if she folded 1000 paper cranes. Because of this story, the paper crane has become a symbol of peace. Origami Jacket Set on a background of vanilla ice-cream bean colored cotton, small cloth origami birds of brightly colored cottons. The front of the jacket shows different steps to making the origami crane. On the back of the jacket are squares of cloth used for folding the cloth cranes in the shape of a fan – often the way origami papers are displayed.

Constellation Jackets Three constellations and many stars adorn the navy blue jackets for adults and children. The constellations Centaurus, Corvus and Crater use the back of the jackets as the palette for the twinkling combination of embroidery, buttons and/or attachments. The Centaurus constellation is one of those that represent two centaurs – Pholus and Chiron. Heracles’ (son of Zeus) task was to retrieve a wild boar that was wreaking havoc and devastation. Along the way, he met Pholus the centaur (half man/half-horse) with whom he shared a delicious meal. Being a bit too bold, Heracles opened a special wine container intended only for centaurs. When the other centaurs realize what has happened, they are infuriated and fight back with whatever means are at their disposal. Pholus is afraid and so Heracles must fight for himself who eventually traps them in the cave of their king, Chiron. After Pholus is accidentally killed by a poisoned arrow shot by his good friend Heracles, King Chiron is also shot with an arrow. Finally Prometheus takes Chiron’s place and with the help of Zeus, moves Chiron to the heavens where we can see him and Pholus in the stars. Corvus the crow is an ancient constellation and was called “Raven” by the Greeks. The story is that the god Apollo sent the crow to collect water for him in the “Goblet” (Crater) that was nearby. However, instead of doing the task for which he was sent, the crow dallied, eating figs, and never collected the water. Because he didn’t do as he was told, he captured a water snake and brought that to Apollo claiming that it was the snake that diverted him. Apollo was angry and threw all three of them – the Crow (Corvus), the goblet (Crater) and the Water Snake (Hydra) into the heavens. The Crow ‘s punishment was to endure eternal thirst – and thus his squawking and screeching instead of being able to sing like most birds.
